Bugs, Etc.

	Slugs (my favourite!)

	
		
		 * crushed eggshells around parimeter of plants or beds
		 * dislike wormwood (artemesia)
		 * sprinkle wood ash or lime
		 * thin flat copper wire around parimeter of beds (slugs get electrical shock)
		 * 8" wide strips of window screening pushed 2-3" into soil around plants, bend top 1/2" outwards. Make in sections so that fence is moveable
		
	


	Cutworms

	
		
		 * cardboard collars 1" into soil with some above ground
		 * matchstick, nail, etc. pushed alongside plant stem will stop cutworm from wrapping around plant
		
	


	Aphids
	

	
		 * plant onion family (garlic, chives, etc.) near roses
		 * organic spray: 3 Tbsp. Ivory Snow laundry detergent in 1 gallon water.  Needs direct hit on aphids. Wash plant 1 hour afterwards.
		 * organic spray: 3 lbs. rhubarb leaves boiled in 3 qts. water, cool & strain.  Add another quart water with a few soap flakes. Spray on plants.  Heavy spraying may burn foliage.
		 * if aphids appear on nasturtiums, it may indicate a lime deficiency. Dust lightly with lime
	
	

Diseases


	Black Spot
	
		
		 * plant tomatoes by roses
		 * avoid wetting foliage on tomatoes when watering
		 * organic spray: 2-3 Tbsp. baking soda, 2-3 Tbsp. light oil, 1 gallon water. Apply as soon as fungus appears, then every 5-7 days while fungus is visible & persists
